NUCLEAR FUELS

Nuclear fuels involve a small family of heavy atom elements that splits when struck by a neutron releasing great amounts of energy. These elements includes three major fissible isotopes; uranium-235, plutonium-239 and uranium 233 which can undergo nuclei reactions to release great amounts of energy.

There are several types of nuclear fuels and they are; uranium based fuels, plutonium based fuels, mixed oxide (MOX) fuels and thorium based fuels.

Uranium based fuels are the most commonly used nuclear fuel. They are made up of uranium which is a radioactive element that undergoes fission to release energy. Examples of uranium based nuclear fuel include; uranium dioxide (UO2), uranium carbide (UC) etc.

Plutonium based fuels are also used in nuclear reactions. They are made up of plutonium which is a radioactive element that undergoes fission to release energy. Examples of plutonium based nuclear fuels include; plutonium dioxide (PuO2) etc.

Mixed oxide (MOX) fuels are a type of nuclear fuel that combines uranium and plutonium. They are used in some nuclear reactors to improve fuel efficiency.

Thorium based fuels are a type of nuclear fuel that uses thorium a radioactive element that undergoes fission to release energy.

The advantages of nuclear fuels are; nuclear fuels have a high energy density. Nuclear fuels do not produce greenhouse emission during energy production. Nuclear power plants can operate continuously, providing a reliable source of energy. Nuclear power plants are scalable that is, they can be built in a variety of sizes making them suitable for both small and large scale energy production.

The disadvantages of nuclear fuels are; nuclear fuels produce radioactive waste which can be hazardous to humans and the environment. Nuclear accidents can occur with serious consequences for humans and the environment. Building a nuclear power plant can be expensive which make it difficult to finance. Nuclear energy is perceived by the public as a high risk technology.

The applications of nuclear fuels are as follows; nuclear fuels are used to generate electricity in nuclear power plants. Radioisotopes of nuclear fuels are used in medicine for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Nuclear fuel radioisotopes are used in industry for various purposes such as sterilization and material testing. Nuclear fuel radioisotopes are used in space exploration to power spacecraft’s and satellites.

The future of nuclear fuels depends on the advances and development of the following technologies; advanced reactor designs that will enable small modular reactors and integral pressurized water reactors to be developed. New fuel types such as thorium based fuels and other advanced fuel will pave the way for improved performance and reduce waste. Increased focus on safety will result in improved reactor design and efficient operation. The need for constant and reliable energy source in the future will result in growing demand for safe and efficient nuclear energy.
